Source: Jentz, Thomas L. and Doyle, Hilary L.: Panzer Tracks No. 4; Jentz, Thomas L: Tank Combat in North Africa; Spielberger, Walter J.: Panzer IV & Its Variants and Achtung Panzer! Spielberger has 20mm instead of 14.5mm/16mm on the turret of the Ausf.A to C, and on the hull sides of the Ausf.B and C. I have used Jentz’ figures because they are more detailed and the most recent. From early 1940 Ausf.A to D vehicles were fitted with extra armour (Zusatzpanzerung) when they were returned to ordnance depots or assembly plants for major repairs or overhaul. The last 68 Ausf.D and all the Ausf.E vehicles had Zusatzpanzerung fitted at manufacture. [up]

4. Pz.Kpfw.IV kz Ausf.F (F1) mit Vorpanzer. Source: Jentz, Thomas L. and Doyle, Hilary L.: Panzer Tracks No. 4. Vorpanzer was fitted from February 1942. It differed from Zusatzpanzerung because it was spaced from the underlying armour, whereas Zusatzpanzerung was fitted directly onto the armour underneath. Vorpanzer was designed to defeat 105mm HEAT projectiles, and to strip off the piercing caps of APC and APCBC projectiles which would then shatter on the FH armour behind. It also caused any HE filler in such projectiles to detonate prematurely. Vorpanzer was not fitted to any other models. On 1 July 1942 it was decided that the designation Ausf.F was to be used instead of Ausf.F1, and Ausf.G instead of Ausf.F2. [up]
