Footnotes

1. Pz.Kpfw.V Panther. Source: Jentz, Thomas L.: Germany’s Panther Tank. The requirement for face hardening (FH) the glacis plate on the Ausf.D was deleted on 30 March 1943, but due to the backlog of precut, heat treated and welded components, completed vehicles without FH glacis plates would have first appeared in August 1943. Schürzen was fitted to the hull sides from April 1943. The Ausf.A had the same chassis as the Ausf.D but an improved turret. The external shape and armour thicknesses of the turret remained virtually unchanged from the Ausf.D however. The Ausf.G had the same turret as the Ausf.A but a redesigned chassis. The Ausf.F had substantially the same chassis as the Ausf.G but a redesigned turret with a much narrower front. If the Ausf.F ever saw combat it would have been in the very last days of the war in the defence of the Berlin area, as it was possibly issued on the 20 to 23 April 1945, to the II./Panzer-Regiment 2.
