Footnotes

1. KV–85. Source: Russian Military Zone and Red Steel. The KV–85 had the same turret as the IS–1, mounted on the hull of a KV–1S, with the hull armour reduced to 65mm. Only 130 KV–85 were manufactured from autumn to winter 1943. [up]

2. IS–1 and IS–2. Source: Jentz, Thomas L: Panzer Truppen Vol 2; Russian Military Zone; Red Steel and Robert Livingston. Red Steel has 132mm as the maximum armour for the IS–1, which disagrees with the Russian Military Zone; the latter is used as it is more complete. For the IS–2 the discrepancies are even greater: both Jentz and Red Steel have a maximum armour of 160mm (Jentz provides a breakdown of the armour which agrees with the Russian Military Zone everywhere but the mantle) while the Russian Military Zone and actual measurements of an IS–2 show a maximum armour of 120mm and 127mm, respectively. Therefore the Russian Military Zone armour scheme is used as it is more complete and is in closer agreement with measurements of an actual vehicle. Two Soviet factories manufactured IS–1 and IS–2 hulls, one factory producing welded hulls and the other cast hulls. The IS–2M was a post-war vehicle and so is not included. [up]

3. IS–2 with straight nose. Source: Russian Military Zone. Welded RHA hull fronts with a straight nose were first manufactured in May 1944; cast hull fronts with a straight nose were first manufactured in June 1944. However the changeover for both RHA and cast hull fronts was not instantaneous and for a while both the original and the straight noses were manufactured together. [up]
