1. 57–mm Anti-Tank Gun M1, M1A1, M1A2, M1A3; and 57–mm Anti-Tank Gun M2. Source: Chamberlain, Peter and Gander, Terry: Anti-Tank Weapons and Hogg, Ian V.: British and American Artillery of World War Two. This gun is based on the British 6–pounder which was converted to USA tolerances, thread and gear sizes. The M1A1, M1A2 and M1A3 have minor variations to the carriage; the M2 incorporated all modifications and was designed to simplify manufacture; all variants had the same ballistic performance. It may be tempting to assume the performance of the USA 57mm gun is the same as the British 6–pounder as the two weapons have the same calibre; however it uses different ammunition which means a difference in penetration. The AP M70 Shot has no HE filler, but the APC M86 Projectile does; this is different from the British ammunition all of which is solid shot. [up]
